- New Valves for San Diego’s Water Supply System, USA
San Diego, CA, the eighth largest city in the United States, needs to import nearly nine out of ten gallons of the country’s drinking water from the far north of the state. Through large-diameter water transmission pipelines, reservoirs and flow-control facilities, the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) provides safe and reliable water.
At one of the pipeline terminal stations, the Water Authority operated two old plug valves to regulate flows in hundreds of miles of its transmission pipeline systems. The plug valves had difficulty withstanding the extreme stresses caused by excessive cavitation and vibration. Local residents complained about unbearable cavitation noise and vibration that not only badly damaged the valves, but nearby homes as well. The valves also had to be replaced every three to five years.
SDCWA decided to replace the old plug valves with VAG Plunger Valves as an alternative. Within a very tight schedule, VAG produced and delivered two VAG RIKO® Plunger Valves. After installation and commissioning, there was an immediate difference, as the new plunger valves did not vibrate.
VAG solved the cavitation and noise problems that SDCWAS had faced in the past. “The pilot project went really well. We are really pleased to have found such a competent manufacturer in VAG, and intend to equip more of our flow control stations with customized VAG Plunger Valves,” said Steve Carpenter, Maintenance Supervisor of SDCWA.
- Zurn helps University of Washington Go Green
With energy and water costs at an all-time high, the University of Washington was looking to cut operating costs when implementing new means of water and energy conservation in their construction projects.
Zurn helped the University with a retrofit plumbing project, which involved changing out old 3.5 gallons-per-flush fixtures to green systems. Finding a water-saving fixture to retrofit to existing designs is not always a simple change.
The Zurn EcoVantage Nano Pint System provided the University with up to 88 percent water savings annually, with an aesthetic improvement as well. Zurn works to provide vast opportunities for building owners everywhere to conserve water and significantly reduce annual operating costs.
"We have nothing but good things to say about our Zurn Installation because we are water and energy-conscious in this building, we appreciate the efficiencies the Zurn product achieves."- Chief Engineer of Building Management Company
- Style, Substance and Water Conservation
The Sundara Handwashing System, influenced by architects and crafted by audacious industrial designers, is a bold approach to the traditional handwashing system. Sundara is a Sanskrit term meaning beautiful.
- VAG Expert Engineering and “Flawless” Product Design Keeps The Rur Dam Schwammenauel Running
The Rur Dam Schwammenauel, located in the Nordeifel uplands of Germany, has a storage capacity of 164,575 acres, making it one of Germany’s largest dams. It catches the large amounts of precipitation from the headwaters of the Rur River. The Schwammenauel Hydropower Plant uses the water for power generation.
Since the valves (installed in the 1920s) had been leaking and could not be operated safely anymore, the dam operator favored VAG as a solution provider to renew all bottom outlets valves, as well as the main inlet valve for the hydropower plant. The water board had a clear preference for VAG valves during the planning and tender phase.
“All of the valves and pipe fittings that were delivered are flawless and fully meet the technical specifications in the tender,” said Herbert Polczyk, former head of the dam division at the Eifel-Rur water board, and emphasized, “We believe that choosing VAG will enable us to continue guaranteeing the reliable operation of our dam.”
Heavy-duty vehicles transported the 23-ton valves to the dam, including two VAG EKN® Butterfly Valves and one VAG EKN® Butterfly Valve —all equipped with Hydraulic Brake and Lift Units —two VAG KSSplus Howell-Bunger® Discharge Valves, one VAG RIKO® Plunger Valve with a venting system, as well as three VAG Dismantling Joints and pipe fittings.
Since the installation, the dam has been running successfully for more than 10 years.
